STEP UPS!

Another love hate relationship with me but I love to incorporate into my own workout program and of course my clients too.  Why should I have all the fun!  STEP UPS!!

There are a multitude advantages to adding this to your work out. One of the biggest advantages that I like is this exercise improves symmetry and balance. The step up is a unilateral leg exercise, which means that you can train each leg independently. 

The strength and endurance from this exercise transfers too many daily activities such as walking upstairs, using a ladder or step-stool. 

Step up should be high enough to create at least a 90° angle at the knee joint when the train leg is on the box, bench, or aerobic step. 

Stand up straight while holding a dumbbell on each hand (palms facing the side of your legs). Place the right foot on the elevated platform. Step down with the left leg by flexing the hip and knee of the right leg as you inhale. 

Beginners start with no weight just your own bodyweight is enough to get your heart pumping. More advanced you can add dumbbells, and even add an Overhead Shoulder Press, Side lateral, Forward Raise or even a Biceps Curl. 

Want to get a little leg workout at home? One minute (60 lovely seconds) of step ups WITHOUT REST! 

All you need is a sturdy chair, or something elevated that you can step up onto. All you do is step up to the chair and push yourself up with your one leg until that leg is extended (straight). Step down and repeat with the other leg. Do this for one minute and I bet you start to breathe a little heavier. If it’s too easy, then grab something with some weight and do it. Just like the lunges, this exercise will help you create power and strength in your lower body.
