How much water is enough?
Cindy, How much water do I need?
Drink up! Why is hydration so important? Your body depends on water to survive. Every cell, tissue, and organ in your body needs water to work properly. It carries nutrients and oxygen to cells and helps the body absorb minerals and other nutrients. It also supports many of the body’s processes, including metabolism, removal of waste, lubrication of your joints and helps to maintain its core temperature. You should drink water every day! Most people have been told to drink an average of 6-8 glasses of water a day, which is quite reasonable. But each of our bodies are different and we all need different amounts to stay hydrated. Most healthy bodies can stay hydrated simply by drinking fluidsas they become thirsty, others fewer than 8 glasses may be enough. If you are concerned that you are not drinking enough, a sure sign is to check your urine. If its colorless or light, you’re well hydrated and off to a great start. If it’s darker yellow or amber you may be showing signs of dehydration, so drink up!
One easy way to determine how much water your body needs is this simple equation: Take your body weight and divide it by two. This will give you the daily amount of water in ounces. For example: if your body weight is 150 lbs., you will need to drink 75 ounces of water a day. Sounds like a lot, right? Especially if you are active or starting a fitness routine. Your body needs that water to function efficiently!
Here are a few tips to help keep you on track:
Keep a water bottle with you during the day, take note of the ounces and fill up as needed
Sip water before, during, and after a workout
When you’re feeling hungry, drink water. Often times the feeling of hunger can be confused with thirst. This is also a great way to keep you feeling full.
Avoid caffeinated beverages which tend to pull water from the body and make you more dehydrated.
If you hate the taste of water, try throwing in a slice of lemon, cucumber or mint.
Now go drink a full glass of water! :) Happy Drinking!
